MySQL AB are often cited, together with the JBoss Group, as the "champions" of the second generation of open source projects. These projects are open source but are directed by for-profit companies. The revenues of these corporations derive from selling consulting services for their otherwise free products.
In fact MySQL AB has another source of revenue. It gives away its products under a double licence: it is possible to buy the rights to include MySQL code in other products without complying with the GNU GPL.
