New Democratic Party of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party is a social democratic party led by Jack Harris. The NDP has never been able to win government in the province. The party elected its first MLA, Gene Long, in 1986 and has been represented in the provincial legislature continually since 1990. It currently has two MLAs.

The Newfoundland and Labrador NDP is affiliated to the New Democratic Party of Canada. The federal NDP has elected two MPs from Newfoundland, Alphonsus Faour in 1978 (by-election) and 1979 and Jack Harris in a 1987 by-election.
