His masterwork, The Autobiography of an Unknown Indian ISBN: 0-201-15576-1 published in 1951 put him on the short list of great Indian English writers.
When India became independent in 1947 he decided that since he had lived through the height and then the extinction of Empire he could write about his life which would parallel the history of the British Empire in India.
He wrote a sequel, Thy Hand, Great Anarch.
