Current base: Louis Trichardt AFB, Louis Trichardt
Notes:
This squadron was South Africa's contribution to the Korean War, from November 1950 to December 1953. They first flew the F-51 Mustang, but were re-equipped with F-86 Sabre from February 1953. During the war they flew 12 067 sorties, with 74 out of 94 Mustangs and 4 out of 22 Sabres lost. 34 pilots were killed. For their actions, the squadron received the United StatesPresidential Unit Citation.
Due to defence budget cutbacks, this unit is currently the only front line fighter squadron of the SAAF. It will probably be re-equipped with the Saab JAS 39B Gripen when it enters South African service in 2006.
