Omeprazole

Omeprazole is one of a group of medicines known as proton pump inhibitors. Omeprazole is the active ingredient in Losec, a drug manufactured by AstraZeneca, which is the most prescribed drug in the United Kingdom.

Proton pumps are found on cells that line the stomach and are used by the cells to produce stomach acid. Omeprazole works by inhibiting the proton pumps. This stops the production of acid.

The lack of the acid in the stomach will aid in the healing of duodenal ulcers, and reduces the pain from indigestion and heartburn; which is caused by excess stomach acid. The medicine can also be used in conjunction with antibiotics to eradicate the helicobacter pylori in a patient's stomach, which is the cause of the majority of stomach ulcers.

As taking the medication inhibits all acid production within the stomach, the patient may become more prone to diseases such as salmonella and other stomach infections. Flatulence, rashes, muscle pain and headache are some of the side effects of this medication.
