Paczki

Pączki (pronounced pong-ch-key) is a Polish pastry that is much like a spherical jam-filled doughnut. The traditional pączek (singular) is filled with prunes. Today other fillings are used, such as lemon, bavarian cream, or raspberry; prune pązcki are still popular, though.

Traditionally, the reason for making pączki is that all the lard, sugar, and fruit in the house would need to be used up before Lent.

It is a common treat eaten on Fat Tuesday in Polish communities in Michigan and Ohio.
