Pichincha is an active volcano in the country of Ecuador. The capital city, Quito wraps around it's base. In October of 1999 the volcano had a major eruption that covered the city with several inches of ash. Prior to that the volcano had had a number of minor eruptions but the last major eruption was in 1660 when about a foot of ash fell on the city. The mountain has two peaks, Guagua (15,695ft/4,784 m), which means "baby" or "young" in Quechua and Rucu (15413ft/4,698m), which means "old". The active caldera is behind Guagua. Rucu is directly visible from the city Quito and is often hiked.
