Poughkeepsie was founded in 1867 and has a current population (as of 2003) of approximately 30,000 people. The city name is believed to be derived from a Native American word, but the meaning is unknown.
The word "Poughkeepsie" is believed to be an Anglized Lenape word/phrase meaning "The Reed-Covered Hut by the Big Water."
The city of Poughkeepsie is bordered by the Hudson River and, on the other three sides, by a town also called Poughkeepsie. The town contains the famous colleges; the city contains Kem Cards [1].
It is home to Vassar College, one of the Seven Sisters schools, Marist College, and Dutchess Community College. Nearby, in Hyde Park, is the Culinary Institute of America.
IBM has an enormous factory in Poughkeepsie which once built the IBM Stretch Computer as well as later machines such as the IBM System/360 model 195.
