The R5 assault rifle is, along with the R4, one of the primary assault rifles in use by the military of South Africa. It is based on the Israeli made Galil rifle, which in turn was based on the AK-47 assault rifle. The R5 operates in semi-automatic, safety and fully automatic firing modes and fires 5.56x45mm rounds. The R5 is manufactured by Vektor, a division of Denel Ltd.
