Arellano-Felix was allegedly one of the most violent members of the Tijuana cartel, being suspect in various murders. He died while in Mazatlan, during what was reported to be a shootout with the police. It is suspected that he was in Mazatlan to kill a drug rival.
Arellano-Felix had been linked by Mexican police to the 1997 massacre of 12 members of a family in Mazatlan.
