Revolution Studios was founded in 2000 by Joe Roth, a former chairman of Walt Disney Studios and Twentieth Century Fox. Revolution is a strategic partner of Sony Pictures, which distributes and markets Revolution's films.

Revolution is a privately held company, with Roth owning the controlling interest. Other shareholders include Hollywood executives Todd Garner, Rob Moore, Tom Sherak and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, as well as Sony Pictures, the Starz Encore Group, and Twentieth Century Fox.
