This is a latinized version of the name. It, together with other variants: Schmudien (German), Żmudź(Polish), Zhmud (жмудь, Russian), Schamaiten (Another German version), is derived from the Lithuanian, Żemaitija, for "Żīmēs žemaitēs", which is "Lower lands", as opposed to "Żīmēs aukštaitēs", "Upper lands".
