Selinunte is an ancient Greek site in the south province of Trapani, in the island of Sicily.

Founding of Selinunte

Selinunte was founded by Megara Hyblaea in the VII BC, it had a very light short life (about 200 years).

History

Selinunte was allied of Carthage mainly to gain the support against Segesta.

Diodorus Siculus wrote about Hannibal that in the 409 BC destroyed Selinunte after a war that counts about 16,000 deads and 5,000 prisoners.

Archaeological Park

The archaeological park is very large, and there are several temples and ruins of the ancient city.

The ancient city was founded on the top of a little mount, and it is close to the sea.

Walking in the city, it's possible to see the great walls and the ruins of houses.
