Sessile oak

The Sessile oak or durmast oak is a large oak tree that is native to most of Europe, and into Anatolia. The botanic name is Quercus petraea (Mattuschka) Liebl. It is a large tree, with leaves larger than that of the European English oak, which it otherwise resembles, and whose range it overlaps.

Significant botanical differences with the English oak include the stalked leaves, and the stalkless (sessile) acorns. It is found more often than the common oak in damper conditions and in upland areas. Hybrids with the English oak are often found, and may be described under the name Q. x rosacea.
