Sigur Rós (which translates as "victory rose") is an Icelandic avant-garde rock and roll band, formed in Reykjavik in 1994, while the band's members were teenagers. Jon Ţor Birgisson (guitarist/vocalist), Georg Holm (bass guitar) and Agust (drums) won a record deal with Bad Taste, a local label, and released Von ("Hope") in 1997, followed very quickly by a remix collection, Recycle Bin. The band hired Kjartan Sveinsson (keyboard) for '\'Ágćtis Byrjun (1999; "good start") to critical acclaim and some popular fanfare, mostly in the United Kingdom.
