SmithBarney, formally Salomon Smith Barney, is a retail brokerage and investment banking division of Citigroup. The term Salomon denoted its stock research division, and with the many corporate scandals of 2002 (which involved unethical practices between research and investment banking divisions in many banks) this led to the cutting out of Salomon from the name.
