It is a remake of the 1953 French film Le Salaire de la Peur, and is fairly faithful to the story of the original.
The film is noteworthy for being a critical and commercial failure following on the heels of Friedkin's early successful films The French Connection and The Exorcist. Also notable is the score by Tangerine Dream, which received much better reviews than the film.
