South Central Los Angeles

South Central Los Angeles is a region in the Southern California city of Los Angeles, California with a majority African American population. It is widely perceived to be suffering from high levels of unemployment and crime. There are problems with illegal drugs and gangs notably the Crips and the Bloods. It was one of the settings for the 1992 civil unrest in Los Angeles. A number of movies have been made about it, often by people who grew up in the area, including South Central and Boyz N the Hood. A segment of Bowling for Columbine was filmed there. City officials recently moved to change the name from South Central to the less stereotyped South Los Angeles.
