Tamara Jernigan

Tamara Jernigan (born May 7, 1959, in Tennessee) is a female astronaut. She flew on five space shuttle missions (three with Columbia and one each with Endeavour and Discovery) and logged 1512 hours in space. In her last mission on the Discovery in 1999, she performed an extra-vehicular activity for about 8 hours.

Jernigan attended Stanford University, where she earned a B.S. degree in engineering in 1981, a M.S. in engineering in 1983 and in astronomy in 1985. in 1985 she was awarded a P.D. in astronomy from Rice University. She entered the NASA astronaut corps in 1986 and retired in 2001. She is married to astronaut Peter Wisoff.
