Tang Ching-sung

Tan Ching-sung was the President of the "Republic of Formosa". He was inaugurated as the President of the Republic of Formosa on May 25, l895 and then issued a declaration of independence from the Ching dynasty. The declaration was not sincere, Tan Ching-sung was a Chinese official and the declaration of independance was an attempt to stave off a Japanese invasion.

The Japanese invaded northern Taiwan on May 29, l895 and President Tang Ching-sung disguised himself as an old woman and fled to China on June 4.
