Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet
Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet (1787-1851) was born in Philadelphia. In 1805 he graduated from Yale. He wanted to do many things such as study law, engage in trade, or study divinity. In 1814 Gallaudet became a preacher. After pursuing with that Gallaudet became interested in writing children's books. Gallaudet was a very known man for all the things he did. He wanted to help the "deaf and dumb". He traveled all over the world to help many different people. This is what Gallaudet did. When he began he started out helping 7 students. He became very interested in helping one particular girl. Alice Cogswell, a 4 year old girl who was deaf. Her father who was a very important man sent her to Gallaudet. He spent most of his time helping this girl to learn sign language and things about deaf culture. This is where his school began.

Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C is a school for deaf but a school made up by a hearing man. Even though Galluadet was not deaf he had interest in deaf people and created a new school for them. Even some hearing students came to this school to learn. Gallaudet University isn't just a school for people who are in college but a school for young people who are in elementary, middle, and high school.
