Tokyo City

Tokyo, as a city name, commonly means the sum of 23 cities (special wards) in the central Tokyo Prefecture, Japan (東京市; Tōkyō-shi), but no longer it has a corresponding Japanese word. This article is about the historical Tokyo City, which lasted until 1943. For present Tokyo, see Tokyo.

History

In 1868, the medieval city Edo, seat of the Tokugawa government, was renamed as Tokyo, then Tokyo Prefecture (-fu) office were opened. The extent of Tokyo Prefecture was initially limitted to the former Edo city (15 wards listed below), but rapidly augumented to be comparable with the present Tokyo Prefecture.

In 1878, 15 wards and 6 districts are placed under Tokyo Prefecture. Wards are placed on the former Edo city.

In 1889, Tokyo City (-shi) was formed with these 15 wards.

In 1832, Tokyo City was augumented with 20 wards from surrounding districts.

In 1943, Tokyo City and Tokyo Prefecture were united into Tokyo Metropolitan Prefecture (-to). Previous wards became directly administered by the Prefecture.

In 1947, Tokyo Metropolitan Prefecture was reformed as a common prefecture, while retaining its name and subtle speciality. Previous wards are merged into 22 and got qualifications comparable to the city.

In 1947, Nerima was separated from Itabashi.

Municipality

Until 1947, peoples in Tokyo City had enjoyed a limitted municipality compared to counterparts in other areas of Japan.
