Tornado plasma hypothesis
Edward Lewis has reported radio emissions that suggest rapid plasma glow discharges (silent "tornado lightning", similar to the plasma filament inside a fluorescent light bulb[1]) on the order of twenty cycles per second. Lewis has associated tornadoes with plasmoids and point discharges, as well as a host of other plasma effects.

However most other researchers dismiss reports of the plasma effect, and these hypotheses remain outside the mainstream.
Plasma is a factor in the creation of ball lightning.
