Trinoda necessitas

Trinoda necessitas was a Latin term used in Anglo-Saxon times: it meant threefold tax. Subjects to an Anglo-Saxon king were required to yield three services: repairing bridges, building fortification, and serving in the fyrd (the militia). Rulers very rarely exempted subjects the trinoda necessitas, because these services were the lifeblood of an Anglo-Saxon kingdom.
