Having been an important market and commercial centre for more than a millennium, Växjö was chartered as a city in 1492. Växjö was by that point already an important religious centre with the Växjö Cathedral was first built during the 12th century. Following the cathedral were schools of which the Old Lyceum is one of Sweden's oldest educational insitutions having seen amongst others Carolus Linnaeus as one of it's students.
Nowadays, Växjö is the administrative, cultural and industrial centre of the Kronoberg Councy and central Smalandia, being home to Växjö University and industries such as Alstom and Aerotech Telub.
