On January 1st, 2002 Waterloo had a total population of 28,898 (13,828 males and 15,070 females). The total area is 21.41 km² which gives a population density of 1,349.74 inhabitants per km².
It is the site of the famous Battle of Waterloo.
One quarter of the registered population are foreigners (non-Belgian). Most work for institutions in Brussels, the Capital of Europe.
