West Texas A&M University originally intent was to be a teacher's college with the name West Texas State Teachers College. In 1963, it changed its name to West Texas State University. The university joined the Texas A&M University System on September 1, 1990 and started to use the name, West Texas A&M University on 1993.
As of 2004, West Texas A&M has approximately 6,700 students. The university contains 57 undergraduate-degree programs and 41 graduate-degree programs.
West Texas A&M's sports teams play in the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference. Their mascot is the buffalo or simply called the "Buffs."
