The village name is Anglo Saxon in origin, and means 'Wyrma's nook of land'. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the village was recorded as Wermelle. There are some scholars who suggest the village name actually refers to a wyrm, or dragon.
The village is fairly low lying, and is often prone to flooding.
