YAMAM

The YAMAM ( ימ"מ ) is the elite civilian CT (counter terrorism) unit of Israel. The YAMAM has a world-wide reputation as a proffesional and successful CT unit, capable of handling the hardest and most complected threats. The YAMAM is both capable of hostages-rescue operations as well as of offensive take-over raids over terrorists.

Name and Organization

YAMAM stands for Special Police Unit (יחידת משטרה מיוחדת). In Israel it is also called "The Unit for Counter-Terror היחידה ללוחמה בטרור". YAMAM answers to Magav centeral command and belong to the civilian police forces rather than the military. Its officers are professional policemen on pay-role, usually with combat experience from their military service within the IDF.
