YAMAM

The YAMAM ( ימ"מ ) is the elite civilian CT (counter terrorism) unit of Israel. The YAMAM has a world-wide reputation as a proffesional and successful CT unit, capable of handling the hardest and most complected threats. The YAMAM is both capable of hostages-rescue operations as well as of offensive take-over raids over terrorists.

Name and Organization

YAMAM stands for Special Police Unit (יחידת משטרה מיוחדת). In Israel it is also called "The Unit for Counter-Terror היחידה ללוחמה בטרור". YAMAM answers to Magav centeral command and belong to the civilian police forces rather than the military. Its officers are professional policemen on pay-role, usually with combat experience from their military service within the IDF.

Operational Record Before al-Aqsa Intifada

YAMAM have carried many counter-terror operations. Some of the missions known to public are listed below:

YAMAM captured a terrorist group hidden in the Arab town of Taibe With the aid of Sayeret Duvedvan and an IDF Caterpillar D9 bulldozer. In the end of the raid, 1 terrorist was arrested and 4 were killed.

Operational Record during al-Aqsa Intifada

YAMAM have carried many counter-terror operations within the last 3 years of violence. The majority of them are classtified. Some of the most noteable are listed below:

YAMAM and Sayeret Matkal resuced Israeli cab-driver Eliyaho Goral, after he was kidnapped by Palestinian militants.

YAMAM force killed Hamas head in Hebron, Abbedullah Qawasameh after the last resisted arrest.

YAMAM forces foiled an attempt massacre in Yokne'am school by Palestinian terrorists.
