交響曲第9番 (ベートーヴェン)

ルートヴィヒ・ヴァン・ベートーヴェンの交響曲第9番ニ短調（作品番号125）は、9番目の交響曲であり、1824年に完成した。

この曲の第四楽章は、有名な「喜びの歌」で、フリードリヒ・フォン・シラーの詩に曲をつけたものである。交響曲に歌が使用されたのは、この曲が初めてである。

日本では単に第九（だいく）と呼ばれることが多く、年末になると各地で第九のコンサートが開かれる。近年では、単に演奏を聴くだけではなく、実際に合唱を行なう方に回る、参加型のコンサートも増えつつある。

初期のCDの記録時間が約74分であることは、この曲が1枚のCDに収まるようにとの配慮の下で決められた。

第四楽章の「歓喜の主題」が欧州連合の歌に制定された。

日本では第4楽章のみ 1924年 1月26日に福岡で九州帝国大学のオーケストラが初演。その後、全曲を1924年 11月29日に東京音楽学校のメンバーにて初演。プロによる日本初演は新交響楽団により1927年 5月3日。

1937年にジョセフ・ローゼンストックが新交響楽団（現在のNHK交響楽団）の音楽総監督に就任した際、「ドイツでは習慣として大晦日に第九を演奏している」と紹介し、年末の演奏が始まった。実際に当時から現在まで年末に第九を演奏しているドイツのオーケストラとして、著名なところではライプツィッヒ・ゲヴァントハウス管弦楽団が挙げられる。日本で年末に第九が頻繁に演奏されるようになった背景には、戦後まもない1940年代後半、オーケストラの収入が少なくて、楽団員の年末年始の生活に困る現状を改善したいと、合唱団も含めて演奏に参加するメンバーが多く、しかも当時（クラシックの演奏の中では）「必ず入る曲目」であった第九を日本交響楽団（現在のNHK交響楽団）が年末に演奏するようになり、それを定例としたことが発端とされる。1960年代から、国内の年末の第九の演奏は急激に増え、現在に至っている。
